GamerKnights is deeply saddened to report that Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata has passed away over the weekend, aged 55. Iwata-San, only the 4th president in the company’s 100+ year history, has been in charge of the company since 2002, overseeing the the majority of the GameCube era, and responsible for Nintendo’s arguably most successful platforms, the DS and Wii. He has been described as ‘iconic’ and a ‘visionary’ by colleagues and journalists across the globe.

Whilst still at HAL, he was responsible for one of my favourite childhood games, Super Smash Bros. 64, and has had a colossal influence on my gaming history, past and present. Whilst it may have been a decade or more since a Nintendo platform has been my primary gaming platform, the company’s vision and strategy sees it still remaining the most beloved and respected player in the business. Iwata not only brought a sense of fun and innovation back to Nintendo, but set it on a clear path away from the strategy of Microsoft and Sony, remaining hugely popular with the vast majority of actual gamers, even if shareholders were less impressed. A titan of the industry, he will be sorely missed by anyone who loves videogames.
