Back in 2008 Quantic Dream premiered a tech demo called Kara – essentially a reel that showed off how good their mo-cap and graphics engine was. It was a brief little film that detailed the birth of an android named Kara as she’s assembled and put through a verbal test. It takes a sharp, upsetting turn when Kara begins to show signs of consciousness and the reel ascends from a tech demo to something genuinely moving. I was absolutely in love with this short when it debuted, and must have watched it a hundred times despite Quantic Dream’s insistence that it was simply a display of the PS3’s power and a way to flex their creative muscle.
