Bayonetta Collection Review

Bayonetta is quickly becoming as much of a Nintendo mascot as Peach and Samus, and she’s got the wardrobe to prove it.

The touch-pad controls have been ported over from the Wii U version as well and improved, but unless you’re playing through the game on Easy these context commands won’t get you overly far. Still, it’s nice they’re there – though I have a feeling they exist solely so Bayonetta can boast it can be played with one hand.
There’s not really any new content if you gave these games a go on the Wii U, but these games were bursting at the seams anyway. Director Hideki Kamiya seems to have ignored the ‘too much of a good thing’ mantra and gotten away with it – Bayonetta 1 and 2 are packed with more weapons than you’ll ever feasibly get to grips with and a huge amount of costumes to unlock (including some seriously cool Nintendo-themed ones that are available from the get-go).

Presentation:

Those hoping that the beefier innards of the Switch might make Bayonetta prettier than she’s ever been should reel in their expectations. Whilst both Bayonetta 1 and 2 look admirable both at home and on the trot, it’s not the best this game has ever looked. In regards to Bayonetta 1, the Switch simply can’t compete with the performance a well-tuned PC can muster, and in my opinion sits pretty close to the Xbox 360 version of the game (and far away from the iffy PS3 release) Bayonetta 2 looks much the same as it did on Wii U. Both of these titles shine on a smaller screen, however, where the 720p resolution is allowed to sing.

All of the fantastic music and voice acting from the original games are presented here in full, and whilst I couldn’t discern any noticeable difference from my time with the previous titles, that didn’t stop the endlessly played ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ getting stuck in my craw for days. Bayonetta’s voice acting in particular is stunning throughout, and gives her character design some extra oomph with a sultry British turn.

Conclusion:

Bayonetta 1 and 2 are some of the best action games ever made, and they’re as impressive on the Switch as anywhere else. Nintendo were incredibly smart to back this horse, and I simply can’t wait for Bayonetta 3 to land. Getting to carry my favourite gaming heroine everywhere I go and stealing some prime demon-punishing Witch Time on the go is a kick handheld gaming hasn’t afforded me before, made even more thrilling as I dodge disapproving looks from mothers on the bus.

If you’ve never played Bayonetta or its stunning sequel before, now is the time to rectify that.

Good

  • Two of the finest action games ever made
  • Wealth of content and costumes

Bad

  • Bayonetta 1 still feels slightly unbalanced
  • Bayonetta 3 still doesn’t have a release date
