Dark Souls: Remastered Switch Review

The Chosen Undead rises once more from the bowels of the undead asylum…

The Switch version of Dark Souls is a beefy port. Packing in the wonderful Artorias of the Abyss DLC the game offers newcomers around eighty to a hundred hours of content (though veterans who have learnt Dark Souls many lessons before can dispatch it in far less time). The ability to play Dark Souls on the go is a real game changer – whilst I spent most of time in Lordran on the TV as usual, I relished the opportunity to take my trials with me, on my daily commute or in the break room at work. It feels like a magic trick, cramming the massive, majestic world into a portable experience, and its one that never gets old.

Presentation:

It doesn’t suffer too much from being on arguably inferior hardware, either. Whilst the game looks crisper and enjoys higher resolutions on PS4 and Xbox One, the differences are negligible unless you have the games running side by side. They’re especially inconsequential on the Switch’s smaller screen, too, where the novelty of seeing Ornstein and Smough zipping around in between your sweaty palms make up for any loss of fidelity.

I never encountered any frame rate issues, either, which was my number one concern going into a port on the Switch. Even in the depths of Blightown – a problem area in the original release – never threw up any roadblocks to my enjoyment. The game is smooth.
The game’s music is just as spectacular as it’s ever been, blasting terrifying, operatic ensembles at you as you tackle the games numerous bosses. It heightens the action and ramps up the adrenaline coursing through you as you get closer to felling a boss that gave you trouble, and it’s just as powerful an accompaniment here as it ever was.

Conclusion:

Dark Souls‘ is a phenomenal game, and the Switch port is a brilliant way to experience it – either for the first time or the hundredth. It never feels constrained or cramped by taking place on the smaller screen of the Switch, and the system handles the port confidently. If you’re desperate for some Dark Souls on the bus, or in bed, or at an awkward funeral, this is the version for you.

Good

  • One of the best games ever made, replicated brilliantly on the Switch

Bad

  • I still can’t beat the Asylum Demon with my broken sword.
