Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens Review

Traveller’s Tales finally pump some fresh ideas into their universally appealing Lego games.

None of these new additions change the Lego formula in any massive way, but they provide a much needed breath of fresh air for a series that was getting stagnant for anyone who’s played as many of them as I have.

Presentation:

As always, Lego Star Wars really looks the part. The perfect marriage of Lego bricks and Star Wars fantastically cool/nerdy aesthetic works perfectly, and all the characters and locations you come across will delight you.

The sound work however is a bit hit-and-miss. The lines ripped straight from the movie are great and the classic Star Wars score is used to full effect. The sound effects are wildly levelled though, and I constantly had to turn my TV set up or down depending on whether a huge blare of triumphant horns was about to deafen me.

The extra dialogue the original actors recorded specifically for the game is a great addition and really sets this title apart from its Lego peers. It’s a shame then, that most of this new voice work feels rushed, very much a one-and-done set up in the studio I imagine. Quality often dips and some of the actors simply don’t sound interested in what they’re doing.

Conclusion:

Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a promising start to a fresher series. It features some much needed variety, whose evolution will hopefully be built upon as the Lego set of games continues to storm ahead. Lego fans and Star Wars diehards are all going to be thrilled with this new addition, especially as a lot of extra content is provided that will keep us all going until Rogue One and Episode VIII arrive. If you’re a fan of either series you owe it to yourself to pick up Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
