Monster Hunter Stories Review

The hardcore depth of the Monster Hunter franchise makes way for a charming and enjoyable spin-off, and the results are a blast.

A lot of players, myself included, are going to try and catch them all. It’s just how we were raised. Even if you’re not drawn to this addictive element though, Monster Hunter Stories is kitted out with plenty to see and do. When I was racing around the world map on my Monstie I really felt the lure to explore and plunder its secret depths, and was usually rewarded for doing so.

Presentation:

Monster Hunter Stories is a damn good looking game – probably one of the best I’ve seen on the system. Games like Xenoblade Chronicles are phenomenal in their scope and vision, but made the cardinal mistake of overestimating the 3DS’ power. Monster Hunter Stories knows its limitations, and plays within those boundaries beautifully.

It’s got to be the most colourful game on the system, and everything from the monster and character design to the lush worlds you’ll venture through really pop. I can’t say enough good things about just how good this game looks. The sound design is equally as strong, with great music underpinning tense moments, or elevating fun exploratory scenes.

Conclusion:

Released nearly a year ago in Japan, “Monster Hunter Stories” is a game I’m flummoxed took so long in being localized. As an entry on the 3DS – a handheld that is perhaps best known for its Pokemon titles and the stranglehold they have on the install base – you’d think publisher Capcom would have seen the obvious comparable appeal (and dollar signs) immediately. Still – I’m thrilled to see this game finally make its way West.

Core fans might be put off by the hard right turn this spin-off has made from the main series, but as a sister-piece, and an introduction to Monster Hunter proper, Stories is a wild success, and has quickly become one of my favourite games on the system.
