Mortal Kombat 11 Review

Mortal Kombat 11’s zany story, superb graphics and friendly difficulty and tutorial options should make it a sure-fire hit. But the grindy Krypt, dubious currencies and lack of balance take some shine of an otherwise excellent fighter.

Multiplayer:

As a fighting game, good net code is obviously essential. Thankfully, I can safely say that I encountered no significant issues with the matchmaking or lag in game. In fact the only real issue is that I get crushed online every single time! Seriously, I have no idea how the rest of the world got so good, or how I’m so bad at fighting games. But seriously, I suck.

Presentation:

MK11 is a very, very fine looking game. The cut-scenes in particular drew comments from someone who has very little interest in games or their graphical fidelity. The transition between the cut-scenes and gameplay is also smoother and more natural than the last two games in the series too. Animation is much, much improved over previous games, and whilst still not the most “realistic”, it’s all the more impressive when the game also runs so well at 4K, and the levels also seem more intricate, detailed and wider than previous games. My only slight criticism is that the majority of the levels tend to use a fairly dark colour palette which doesn’t always bring out the full quality of the graphics.

The score mostly accompanies the cut-scenes, but what’s there is good, and the most impressive thing is that the voice actors for the very expansive cast have recorded specific lines of dialogue for almost every possible match-up. The one issue is Ronda Rousey, who is absolutely rubbish as Sonya, despite extensive use of her in the marketing materials.

Conclusion:

Mortal Kombat 11” has the best, dumbest, cleverest story to any fighting game. Heck, it has a better plot than most games or even films. It balances a huge cast of characters, old and new, perfectly. The game looks incredible, and is generally well acted, animated and voiced. But the Krypt currencies, difficulty of some of the challenges and just how intrinsically free-to-play mechanics have been woven into the game feel really sleazy.

Ultimately, if you just want to play online and aren’t too bothered about the skins, announcers and other cosmetics and items that are unlockable, then this is the most complete and best playing Mortal Kombat to date.
