The Crew: Wild Run Review

With no reason to use much of the new content, and many of the improvements coming in a free patch, Wild Run seems like a set of fairly poor value challenges for only the hardcore fans.

Running out of steam?

The Wild Run promises to revolutionise last year’s ‘The Crew’, with 3 new race types, the addition of bikes, a challenge mode, and a complete overhaul of the graphics and many of the gameplay systems. Is this ambitious kind of DLC even possible on the consoles?

Gameplay:

There’s no new story missions as part of the Wild Run DLC, which disappointed me. It means that the bikes, which were one of the biggest selling points, are pretty much pointless apart for driving around the game world and wrapping up any content which you may have missed. It also means that races in the three new categories, Drift, Drag and Monster, are limited to the new ‘Summit’ events, which are in effect, just a set of weekly challenges which you need to qualify for. The Drag and Monster events are both worthwhile, with the huge trucks being my favourite new gameplay style.

The big beasts handle well, and the floaty physics allow you to pull off plenty of big jumps and tricks as you pick up scoring markers within the time limit. The drag mode is pretty standard, but is at least a solid new way to play, but the drift mode disappointed me. I’ve never been a huge fan of The Crew’s handling model. Even for an arcade game it’s felt a bit disconnected from the road, and Drift just makes this even worse. Always done on a wet road, there’s very little feedback through the controller, making pulling off drifts pretty hard. There’s also very little finesse to it either. You don’t lose points for crashing, or just doing donuts on the track.

The scoring system seems to know the limitations of the handling model, letting you do what you like in an attempt to reduce what would otherwise be a frustratingly poor new mode. Overall, whilst The Summit allows for Wild Run content to continue as long as the development team want it to, the lack of ‘proper’ new races makes the new content here seem pretty wildly over-priced.

Good

  • Improved graphics
  • New ways and incentives to play

Bad

  • No reason to use bikes
  • Drift handling is weak
  • Expensive
