Unravel 2 Review

Allow yourself to get completely wrapped up in this wonderful co-op adventure.

If you’re looking for a decent challenge it’s here, but if you and your co-op partner aren’t the most co-ordinated pair you can turn on optional slow-mo to help out with the trickier platforming sections. I love this feature as it allows difficulty to be adapted on the fly – and helps the countless couples out there who are playing with a pair of hardcore gamer / coerced loved one.

Presentation:

Unravel Two is just as cute as its predecessor. Being tiny in a oversized area is one of my favourite visual themes – from Super Mario Bros. 3 and its Giant World to more recent examples like Little Nightmares. Making your way through regular environments as little yarn dudes is a similar treat. You can even customise and re-colour your characters for a more personal touch.

The sound design is okay – honestly it’s probably the weakest part of the whole package because it’s just kind of forgettable. Nothing stood out as obnoxiously bad, but at least that would be memorable in its own way.

Conclusion:

Unravel 2‘ is an answer to the naysayers of Yarny’s first outing. The series always had a distinct, charming look, but with the addition of a second Yarny the gameplay also feels unique. If you have a willing partner to sit down and guide some bundles of string through Unravel Two’s wonderfully built dioramas, it’s well worth the price of admission.

It’s a blast from start to finish, and one you’ll want to get completely wrapped up in.
