Bayonetta And Vanquish 10th Anniversary Bundle Review

An incredible way to play some incredible games.

The sheer range of options at your disposal, especially when combining your weapons and guns, meant that there was a unique playstyle for everyone. The provocative visuals that saw Bayonetta stripping down to pull off her wackiest attacks yet, which involve summoning monsters made of Bayonetta’s hair to punish enemies in S&M fashion, are still stunning.

The only problem I really had with the original – its penchant for bosses so big that the fights are relegated to lame sessions of ankle-slashing – is still here, of course (this is only an remaster, after all) and its still frustrating, but I wasn’t expecting any difference there.

Presentation:

Both games play beautifully, I never noticed any frame drops from the 60FPS target (though there might have been some brief hiccups I missed) and for both games this is an incredible boon. They both benefit from the silky smooth action and responsiveness, and feel like their best iterations yet visually speaking. I have to say the PC version of Vanquish spoiled me – I never thought that this game, a game built for consoles originally, would benefit so much with mouse and keyboard controls, but after playing like that it was a little difficult to go back.

The lack of Nintendo-themed bonuses also hurt on Bayonetta – I did so love playing as Samus – but the reasons those goodies are absent are obvious.

Visually they’re stunning too, with crisp 4K visuals really popping on the appropriate consoles (they’re locked to the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X). The textures themselves don’t seem to have been improved for this new version neccesarily, but the action is sharper and less muddy than it would be on an older console.

Vanquish and its striking art design especially benefits from this sharp focus, but Bayonetta and her screen-filling demonic-attacks are no slouch, either.

Conclusion:

I’m so pleased that these games are getting yet another chance to wow audiences. I don’t care how many times it takes, how many remasters it requires, the world needs to know how incredible Vanquish is (people already seem pretty sold on Bayonetta though, and are all looking forward to her third outting on the Switch, hopefully later this year). If this is any indication of a second Vanquish, sign me up.

If you’re looking to play these games for the first time, it’s a great, clean, fluid introduction to two of Platinum’s best.

Good

  • Fantastic resolution and frame rate sell the action of each game
  • The gameplay of both titles is still top of their class
  • Bayonetta's legs

Bad

  • Vanquish deserves to be played Mouse & Keyboard
  • Bayonetta's ankle-slashing bosses put spectacle over gameplay
  • A little pricey for games that have been re-released so many times
